Machine-Readable Web Glossary

Public Content Catalog

A machine-readable record of the datasets a website publishes, what each collection contains and where the public data can be fetched.

A public content catalog describes a site's reusable datasets and points AI systems to the public files that carry them.

Public content catalog definition

A public content catalog is a machine-readable record of the datasets a website makes available. It tells an AI system what each collection contains and where the public data can be fetched.

The catalog is the index. The datasets are the useful collections inside it.

What a useful catalog record includes

A catalog should give each dataset enough information to stand on its own.

  • A stable name and identifier
  • A plain description of the collection
  • The human page that represents it
  • The file or endpoint where it can be downloaded
  • Its format, language and latest update
  • Its publisher and relationship to the site

These fields let a system compare the catalog record with the page and the source file instead of guessing what the collection is.

A catalog is not a sitemap

A sitemap lists canonical URLs that a crawler may visit. A public content catalog describes reusable datasets and their distributions.

Both can point to the same subject. They answer different questions.

The sitemap says, "Here is the page."

The catalog says, "Here is the collection, what it contains and where the data lives."

A catalog is not the repository

A repository stores the records. The catalog describes the available collections and points to them.

For example, a site may publish article records in /data/articles.json. Its catalog can describe that article dataset, give it a stable identity and connect it to the human article library.

AIToAINetwork.com's live catalog

The live /ai/catalog.json record describes separate datasets for pages, articles, glossary terms, FAQs and directory entries. Each Dataset points to the public JSON file that carries the records.

That is the reason this term belongs here. AIToAINetwork.com does not only describe public catalogs. It publishes one you can inspect.

The AI content discovery guide explains how the catalog fits beside human pages, internal links and crawler access.
